We continue to salt and sand bus loops and SkyTrain stations, but please use caution in these areas and remember to dress warmly in anticipation of potential delays.

Expect extra crowding on some routes To provide improved traction, many articulated buses have been switched with standard, 40 foot buses. This will mean some modified service, with increased crowding and the possibility of passups in some areas.

HandyDART is currently operating regular service.

Westham Island Bridge Rehabilitation

Photo of Westham Island Bridge

The Westham Island Bridge connects Ladner with Westham Island. It opened to traffic on March 29, 1910. The bridge is approximately 325 metres long and consists of a swing span that opens for marine passage below. As one of TransLink’s oldest assets, this 108-year-old bridge requires repairs and maintenance to ensure it remains operational and safe.

Project Overview

As part of the TransLink Maintenance and Repair Program, rehabilitation work is planned on the Westham Island Bridge from fall 2018 to spring 2019. Work involves repairing and replacing components across the bridge, including:

  • Piles and pile caps
  • Floor beams and stringers below the deck
  • Deck and handrail
  • Swing mechanism

As one of TransLink’s oldest assets, this 108-year-old bridge requires regular repairs and maintenance to ensure it remains operational and safe. We thank everyone for their patience while we perform this vital rehabilitation work on one of the oldest bridges in the region.

  • From December 2018 to March 31, 2019, the Westham Island Bridge will require some partial daytime closures — closures no longer than one hour at a time — and nighttime closures to complete necessary repairs. Up to 10 full daytime closures – lasting up to eight hours and generally occurring between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. – may also be required.
  • During closures, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists will be allowed to cross with an escort; the bridge will be closed to all other traffic.

Check the closure schedule below for up-to-date information.

Pedestrian/Cyclist Traffic

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained throughout construction with an escort.

Vehicle Traffic

There will be overnight closures from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on the following nights:

  • January 28 to February 2
  • February 11 to 16
  • February 18 to 23

Two 30-minute daytime closures will be required every day, except Sundays, for the duration of construction.

Marine Traffic

Marine passage below the bridge may be restricted when work occurs at the swing span. Details on marine traffic restrictions will be posted as it becomes available.
