New TransLink study to look at EV charging through transit-generated energy

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC — TransLink today announced a new study into using excess energy generated by the SkyTrain and trolleybus systems to charge electric vehicles. The study is a result of the selected idea from the 2022 Open Call for Innovation. If proven feasible, this idea could bring more transit vehicle chargers to SkyTrain stations or bus exchanges.

TransLink is also announcing the theme for the 2023 Open Call for Innovation, which will seek new ways to maintain transit infrastructure.

“We are always excited to collaborate with the best and brightest minds to ensure we are innovating transit as new technology emerges,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “Through the Open Call for Innovation, TransLink is always seeking innovative collaborations that have the potential to transform Metro Vancouver’s transit system.”

The Open Call for Innovation is an annual call encouraging entrepreneurs, businesses, inventors, and innovators to help TransLink introduce new technology in its operations and maintenance practices.

Last year’s Open Call for Innovation asked for ideas that could help reduce the carbon footprint from transportation in Metro Vancouver. The successful idea from last year’s call was submitted by Kiepe Electric. TransLink is committing to study the feasibility of this idea.

TransLink’s 2023 Open Call for Innovation opens this week and is seeking ideas to keep TransLink’s system well maintained, reliable, and high performing.

Some examples of ideas could include:

  • The use of drones to inspect or repair transit infrastructure
  • Sensors or artificial intelligence (AI) platforms to better predict or identify potential hazards
  • Virtual or augmented reality systems or wearable technologies to improve and support maintenance.

Submissions open August 1 and run until September 15. Ideas can be submitted on TransLink’s Website.
