Westham Island Bridge Replacement Project
The Westham Island Bridge is the island's only road connection, and has carried the community across the south arm of the Fraser River in Delta for more than a century. Through the Westham Island Bridge Replacement Project, TransLink has begun planning the future crossing to keep the island connected in the decades ahead.
The existing bridge remains safe for use today. We monitor and maintain it regularly, and essential rehabilitation work will help keep it operational in the near term.
A replacement crossing takes years to plan, design, fund, and build, so planning is starting while the existing bridge is still serving the island. Right now, we're gathering information to develop and assess design options.
What's Happening Now
Through 2026, we're studying how the existing Westham Island Bridge is used by the community and what would be needed in a future crossing.
As part of this work, a temporary camera at the bridge will record bridge usage and traffic flow patterns on select days starting July 22, 2026, and will return periodically until summer 2027. The camera operates only on collection days, and this work won't affect bridge access or traffic.
Recordings will be used only for traffic analysis in support of the Westham Island Bridge Replacement Project. To the extent that recordings capture personal information, the collection is done in accordance with ss. 26(c) and 26(e) of BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Public Engagement
Later this year, we will undertake public engagement to gather input from farm operators, marine stakeholders, and other bridge users to help shape the design for a future crossing.
