Expo Line Running Rail Replacement

Worker replacing running rail on SkyTrain

As part of our commitment to keeping the system in a state of good repair, over roughly the next 10 years we'll be replacing approximately 5,000 linear metres of running rail and an average of approximately 7,800 rail pads annually. Maintaining our running rail and rail pads is critical to keeping our customers moving smoothly through the system.

Through December 2018 and into spring 2019, the running rail replacement project replaced approximately 4,900 metres of rail between Waterfront and Stadium–Chinatown stations. Through 2018, we replaced 8,400 rail pad assemblies in that same area of the system, including inside Dunsmuir Tunnel which had one of the worst sections of rail pad corrosion that remained in the system.

Ongoing Rail Replacement

From late spring 2019 to fall 2019, we expect to replace 1,800 linear metres of running rail and 4,000 rail pads between Stadium–Chinatown and Main Street–Science World stations.
