The new Lougheed Hwy RapidBus will connect people to Coquitlam Central SkyTrain Station with the flexibility and convenience of all-day service that runs every 10 minutes at peak times. Of the five RapidBuses TransLink is launching in January 2020, the Lougheed RapidBus has the best time savings because its route takes it primarily over a highway. A trip from Maple Ridge to Coquitlam Central Station will take 30-37 minutes.

Today, there are eight bus routes that travel along Lougheed moving a combined total of 18,500 passengers/day. All eight buses will see time savings from the street changes we're making.

Public support for all aspects of the Lougheed Highway RapidBus was overwhelmingly positive. TransLink is proceeding with implementing the service plan as proposed during consultation.

There will be no change to the existing 701 service.

Future changes to local service
 Route 595
  •  Extend to the corner of 203rd Street and Lougheed Hwy to connect with the RapidBus.

To ensure RapidBuses can deliver fast and reliable service and don't get stuck in traffic, we've worked with local governments to identify street and traffic changes that will speed up bus-travel times. These Street changes target areas where buses face the worst delays. Changes are then tailored to the unique street context. Bus-priority measures improve travel times for all buses travelling along the corridors while having a negligible impact on regular traffic.

For details on the transit priority projects planned on Lougheed Highway, see the map below.

Bus-access improvements at Coquitlam Central Station

We're making changes to the parking lot at Coquitlam Central Station and the Bus Exchange to get ready for the new Lougheed Highway RapidBus. Work will begin on July 3 and occur in three phases. Near-term details are as follows.

Aug. 19, 2019

Phase 3 (daytime and nighttime work)

There will be temporary changes to the bus loop in phase 3. Some bus stops may be temporarily relocated within the loop while others will be relocated outside the loop. Signage will be in place to advise of stop locations. Customers heading to, and from, SkyTrain will need to follow signage to access the bus loop. Works are occurring at Bay 7.

Short-term look ahead

Nov. 18, 2019

Pitt Meadows: Harris Road

Starting November 18, for approximately three weeks, the following work will be completed:

  • Changes to curbs and gutters at bus stops, including removal, and pouring of new concrete
  • New signage, including traffic and bus stop signs
  • Intermittent road changes may occur. Roadside signage will be in place to advise of the closure.

Maple Ridge: Laity

Starting early December, for approximately three weeks, the following work will be completed:

  • Changes to curbs and gutters at bus stops, including removal, and pouring of new concrete
  • New signage, including traffic and bus stop signs
  • Intermittent road changes may occur. Roadside signage will be in place to advise of the closure.

Port Coquitlam: Lougheed Highway from Oxford St. to Ottawa St.

  • Changes to the curbs and gutters, including removal and pouring of new concrete.
  • Removal of existing road material and pouring of concrete at new RapidBus stops.
  • Installation of concrete bus pads.
  • Line marking removal and new line marking installation.
  • New signage installation.

We expect construction to last for approximately one month in the intersections, with work occurring intermittently along Lougheed Highway from Oxford St. to Ottawa St. work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some night work will be required, with crews working between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Ottawa St. Construction: Westbound construction will begin the week of November 25 and last approximately two weeks. Signage will be in place to direct customers to the temporary bus stop at 3061 Lougheed Hwy.

Aug. 30, 2019

Port Coquitlam: Lougheed Highway between Westwood St and Jervis St. Construction

  • Installing new curbs and gutters
  • Modification of traffic island at Westwood and Lougheed intersection
  • Line marking removal and new line marking installation
  • New signage installation

Construction will end in late November. Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with night crews working between 7 pm and 4 am. We expect moderate traffic impacts as single-lane closures are required on Lougheed Highway. There will be traffic control personnel in place to direct traffic throughout the day. Together with the contractor, we are making every effort to minimize the impact of this construction activity. To reduce the impact on daytime traffic, we are completing some of this required roadwork at night when there are fewer vehicles on the road.

July 3, 2019

City of Coquitlam: Barnet/Lougheed Highways – Coquitlam Central Station to Westwood St.

  • Changes to the curbs and gutters, including removal and pouring of new concrete
  • Removal of existing road material and pouring of concrete at new RapidBus stops
  • Line marking removal and new line marking installation
  • New signage installation
  • Creation of a new, multi-use pathway that runs on the south side of Lougheed Highway from Christmas Way to Westwood St., requiring limited tree removal and replanting

Construction will start July 3 and take approximately four months to complete. Work will take place between 7am and 5pm, with additional night crews working between 7 pm and 4 am, on some nights. We expect there will be moderate traffic impacts as single-lane closures are required on Lougheed Highway. There will be traffic control personnel in place to direct traffic throughout the day and night (when night crews are working).

We will be closing the left-hand turn lane from Lougheed to Barnett until November 29th.
