Pattullo Bridge overnight lane closures beginning July 28

July 22, 2019

Maintenance enhances bridge safety and functionality

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC — Starting July 28, the Pattullo Bridge will be closed in alternating directions for maintenance and annual inspection to improve and ensure bridge safety. Traffic access will be either northbound or southbound only.

Southbound Closures:

  • Sunday, July 28, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am
  • Monday, July 29, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am

Northbound Closures:

  • Tuesday, July 30, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am
  • Wednesday, July 31, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am
  • Thursday, August 1, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am
  • Friday August 2, 2019: 10 pm – 5 am

Affected N19 bus trips will be re-routed over the Queensborough Bridge.

The lane closures are required for the safety of the inspection crew and for people driving across the bridge.

Bridge users are encouraged to use the Port Mann or Alex Fraser Bridge as alternatives during the closures. Emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge in both directions at all times.

The maintenance will involve the installation of early seismic warning and wind monitoring sensors. These sensors will improve safety for bridge users by detecting seismic activity and monitoring wind speeds at the bridge. The new system will allow us to block traffic to the bridge prior to a wind or seismic event occurring.

Installation includes:

  • Early Seismic Warning and Monitoring System sensors
  • Bridge closure devices
  • Fibre-optic cables
  • Advanced warning lights and signs

The annual inspection involves checking the underside of the bridge deck to ensure all equipment is functioning properly. The new system and our regular annual inspections help us to maintain the safety of the bridge until its replacement is completed in 2023.

We thank bridge users and neighbours for their patience during this time.
