Surrey Central opens its gates to brand-new stationhouse

February 22, 2019

SURREY, BC — In the coming weeks, customers travelling to Surrey Central will experience a more seamless journey with access to a brand-new north stationhouse. This significant addition delivers a station that can now manage double the capacity, all while making it easier for customers connecting to and from the Expo Line or catching their bus from the exchange.

“Last year, there were more than four million transit journeys travelling through Surrey Central Station, making it one of the most important transit hubs South of the Fraser,” said TransLink’s CEO Kevin Desmond. “With ridership continuing to grow in the region, these investments will ensure that we can meet demand today and in the future.”

Upgrades include:

  • Two new entrances with access to City Parkway and Central Ave
  • Three new escalators, one elevator and three staircases
  • An iconic public art piece: Marianne Nicolson’s The Sea Captain
  • New lighting and glass walls improving design, safety and security
  • A future retail space

Construction began at Surrey Central Station in March 2017. It is the last of the seven Expo Line station upgrades to be completed as part of the original Expo Line Upgrade Program. The other six stations include Scott Road, Main Street – Science World, New Westminster, Joyce-Collingwood (Phase 1), Metrotown and Commercial-Broadway (Phase 2).

We thank our senior government partners for making this project possible, and our customers and neighbours for their patience during construction. Total budget for this project was $24.3 million. The Government of Canada committed $3.2 million through the Building Canada Fund, the Government of British Columbia contributed $6.8 million, and the remainder was provided by TransLink.

Randeep Sarai, Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

“Our investments in public transit are allowing people to spend less time in traffic commuting home from work and more precious time with their families. These major upgrades to Surrey Central Station, will improve the user experience, accommodate a growing ridership and help make the transit system more accessible for Surrey residents well into the future.”

Honourable Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and Minister Responsible for TransLink –

“The upgraded Surrey Central Station is an example of a smart, strategic investment in Surrey’s present and future needs. Our government’s $2.5-billion contribution to the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Vision will include enhancements to Surrey’s transportation network, including rapid transit, increased bus service, and a new B-Line along Scott Road. These upgrades and other improvements to come will make sure Surrey can continue to thrive and grow as an integral part of Metro Vancouver.”

Doug McCallum, Mayor of Surrey –

“The new Surrey Central stationhouse is not only essential but timely. With Skytrain expanding in Surrey eastward to Fleetwood, Clayton and Langley, this upgrade to the City’s transportation network not only plans for the transit users of today, but for the increased ridership that will undoubtedly come as our rapid transit system grows throughout the region.”

Jonathan X. Coté, Mayor of New Westminster and the Chair of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation –

“It’s vital that we continue to invest in projects that ensure our transit system meets the needs of our growing region. These station upgrades not only provide a better transit experience, but also contribute to the success and livability of our communities.”
