Power Rail Replacement Project | SkyTrain | Major | May 12 2014 12:00:AM |
Power Rail Replacement. The work will occur overnight, Sunday through Thursday, starting at 8pm, and will finish before start of service the next morning.
The Power Rail Replacement Project has resumed as of Sunday, May 12, 2013.
Passengers travelling between 22nd Street and Metrotown stations may experience delays of 10 to 15 minutes. Trains also may be held for up to 5 minutes at stations located just outside the work area. Additional trains will operate between Waterfront and Metrotown stations.
We’re replacing about 34 kilometres of original power rail on the Expo Line. The power rail supplies SkyTrain vehicles with power. Power rail will be replaced in the track sections between Nanaimo and Scott Road stations (power rail replacement work between Waterfront and Main Street stations will take place in the second phase of the project – start date (To Be Determined).
The project is expected to take 15 months to complete. The work will happen overnight, Sunday through Thursday, starting at 8 p.m. and will finish before start of service the next morning.
It will involve single-tracking (when trains run on the same track in alternating directions) between stations where power rail upgrades are being made and passengers should allow for up to 15 minutes extra transit time. Passengers may also have to switch trains at Columbia Station and/or Commercial-Broadway Station.Millennium Line trains will operate from VCC-Clark to Columbia ONLY (customers should change at Commercial-Broadway or at Columbia)
Special circumstances (i.e. major concerts in downtown Vancouver) may result in the start of single-tracking being delayed or even cancelled on some nights.
Service Impact: Five (5) nights a week, starting at 8 p.m. until end of service, there will be single-tracking (when trains run on the same track in alternating directions) between stations where power rail upgrades are being made. During single-tracking, passengers can expect their SkyTrain trip to take, on average, five (5) minutes longer than usual and occasionally as much as 15 minutes longer than usual. Passengers may have to switch trains at Columbia Station and/or Commercial-Broadway Station.
- Mon June 17: reduced service after approx. 8 p.m. Work resumes in the Edmonds / Royal Oak area. SkyTrain will single track (trains travel on the same track in alternating directions) around the work area.
- Tue June 18: reduced service after approx. 8 p.m.
- Wed June 19: Single track operations will be delayed until 11 p.m. due to the Whitecaps game
