Area Transit Planning in the South of Fraser Region
The South of Fraser Area Transit Plan
The South of Fraser Area Transit Plan is a long term vision and short term implementation plan for transit service in the South of Fraser municipalities of Surrey, Delta, Langley and White Rock. The plan was approved by the TransLink Board in the spring of 2008, following more than two years of public and stakeholder consultation as well as detailed technical analyses.
While a population target of one million may sound a long way off, the South of Fraser Area Transit Plan proposes that 45% of the plan’s overall improvements be implemented by the time the South of Fraser population hits 700,000, projected at approximately 2013. This large amount of service represents nearly half of the planned transit expansion for the entire Metro region in the same timeframe, and also represents a 76% increase in the South of Fraser fleet compared to 2006.
Plan Highlights
The Plan was developed based on significant public and stakeholder input, and focused on three key foundational elements:
- Shifting to a more urban grid-based transit network, which works best with corridor development and densification;
- Developing the sub-region’s Frequent Transit Network; and
- Improving service internal to the South of Fraser, in particular the previously undeveloped east-west connections.
Key improvements to be delivered in the plan include:
- 375 additional buses
- 36 km of busway
- 23 km of provincial highway curbside busways (Highways 91 and 99)
- Highway 1 median busway (provincial)
- 17 new or upgraded transit exchanges
- 2 new transit centres
- 4 park and ride lots
