Main Street Station Upgrades

Main Street SkyTrain Station is an Expo Line Station in East Vancouver. Originally built as a demonstration station during Expo '86, it’s now one of the busiest SkyTrain stations on the system. The station was identified as a priority for upgrades by the Expo Line Station Review in 2007.

The main goal of the station upgrade is improved accessibility. The east side of the station, which is crucial for passengers transferring to buses, currently has no escalator or elevators while the west side’s elevator does not provide direct access to the platform for passengers who need to purchase tickets. Other issues at the station include visibility, security, aesthetics and accommodation of fare gates.

Planned upgrades to the station include:

  • New escalators and elevator
  • Open station design with better lighting and visibility
  • Plaza at the west (VanCity) side of the station
  • Security improvements

Design of the upgrades is complete. As construction funding was approved in the Moving Forward 2011 Supplemental Plan, construction will begin in 2012.
