About the Study
TransLink and the Province of British Columbia are leading the UBC Line Rapid Transit Study and are working with the City of Vancouver, University of British Columbia, University Endowment Lands and Metro Vancouver. This multi-year technical study will identify and evaluate rapid transit alternatives for the Broadway corridor from Commercial Drive to UBC.
In Phase 1, seven potential alternatives for the future UBC Line were identified through technical work and public consultation. In Phase 2, we are designing and evaluating these alternatives in more detail. More information about the study phases can be found on our What's Next page.
Rapid transit is being considered because:
-
Broadway is a regionally important and growing corridor. 100,000 trips are taken by bus every day, and with 30% more jobs and people expected by 2041, demand is growing.
-
Central Broadway (Burrard St. to Main St.) is growing. As the region’s second largest employment centre, Central Broadway is one of the region’s largest transit destinations that will continue to grow.
-
UBC is growing too. With 60,000 daytime students, faculty and staff, UBC is also one of the region’s largest transit destinations. Bus trips have increased by 200% since 1997.
-
Existing service is reaching capacity. Journey times are unpredictable, buses are full and 2,000 people are passed up in the morning rush every day. With buses already arriving every one to two minutes at peak times, a better solution is needed.
-
We have ambitious goals for cleaner air and healthier communities. Read the Provincial Transit Plan or Transport 2040 plan for more details.
