About the Study
TransLink and the Province of B.C. are leading the Surrey Rapid Transit Study in partnership with Metro Vancouver, the City of Surrey and the City of Langley.
Over the next 30 years, Metro Vancouver's population is projected to grow by one million people. Much of this growth will take place in Surrey and surrounding communities. This growth has many challenges and opportunities, and we need to start planning for these now.
Rapid transit can help by:
-
Meeting, shifting and helping shape travel demand. 84% of trips made between urban centres in Surrey and surrounding communities are currently by car.
-
Shaping land use to achieve regional and municipal plans. Surrey Metro Centre is growing significantly, and this growth needs to be sustainable and encourage better transportation choices.
-
Making these communities more economically competitive by stimulating economic development while also giving people better transportation choices.
-
Aiding in the achievement of ambitious goals for cleaner air and healthier communities. Read the Provincial Transit Plan or Transport 2040 plan for more details.
There are many potential options for a rapid transit network. All the benefits and impacts - concerning economic development, environment, financial, social and community, transportation, urban development and deliverability - are being considered. In Phase 1 we identified a range of network alternatives that were the most promising. In, Phase 2, we are examining these alternatives in more detail. More information about the study phases can be found on our What's Next page.
