About the Projects

Each project, listed in the tabs below, is designed to help keep the system in a state of good repair. Under each listing, you'll find detailed information about the work scheduled, the timing and most importantly, any impact the project might have on your trip. As the upgrades will take place over approximately two years, we've sorted projects into two categories: Current(active) and Completed.

Waterfront Station: Temporary Elevator Closure

What's Happening: Due to scheduled maintenance, the elevator at Waterfront Station operating from the Cordova Street entrance to the platform level will be temporarily closed for one day.
When: May 17, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Service Impact: Passengers with mobility impairments requiring access at Waterfront Station are encouraged to use the red emergency phone or speak directly to a SkyTrain Attendant for assistance.

Burrard Station: Temporary Elevator Closure

What's Happening: Due to scheduled maintenance, the elevator at Burrard Station operating from the Burrard Street entrance to the platform level will be temporarily closed for one day.
When: May 18, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Service Impact: Passengers with mobility impairments requiring access at Burrard Station are encouraged to use the red emergency phone or speak directly to a SkyTrain Attendant for assistance.

Joyce-Collingwood Station: Temporary East Entrance Closure

What's Happening: Due to a floor tile installation at Joyce-Collingwood Station, the east entrance will temporarily closed.
When: May 7 until May 18, 2012 at 9 a.m.
Service Impact: Passengers may enter the station via the existing northwest and west entrances (on Joyce Street, elevator accessible).

Expo Line Power Rail Upgrades

What's Happening: We're replacing about 38 kilometres of original power rail on the Expo Line. The power rail supplies SkyTrain vehicles with power, approximately 650 volts DC. Power rail will be replaced in the track sections between Waterfront and Main Street stations, and in the track sections between Nanaimo and Scott Road stations.
When: Summer 2012
Service Impact: There will be single-tracking (when trains run on the same track in alternating directions) between stations where power rail upgrades are being made. Specific details (date/time and service impacts) will be available on our Service Impacts page.

29th Avenue Station: Temporary Bay Relocation

What's Happening: To accommodate the start of faregate construction at the north entrance of 29th Avenue Station, the "33 UBC" bus will be temporarily relocated from Bay 1 to Bay 5.
When: April 23, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may board the "33 UBC" at the temporary Bay 5, northeast of the current Bay 1. This bus bay is also used to load the "PNE Specials."

Surrey Central Station: Temporary Bay Assignments

What's Happening: Due to increased faregate construction activity in and around the south entrance at Surrey Central Station, multiple bus bays will be temporarily re-assigned.
When: April 23, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact:

Signage will be placed to direct SkyTrain and bus passengers to and from the station's south entrance and around the construction site. The following bays will be affected:

  • Bay 1 - Closed for Construction
  • Bay 2 - Unloading Only
  • Bay 3 - 320 Langley Centre / Fleetwood
  • Bay 9 - 321 New Westminster Station and 321 Newton Exchange / White Rock Centre / White Rock South
  • Bay 10 - Closed for Construction
  • Bay 14 (New) - 322 Guildford / 335 Fleetwood (a new temporary bay located on University Drive)

Surrey Central Station: South Entrance Construction

What's Happening: The second construction phase at Surrey Central Station will start at the south entrance, closing a large portion of the bus loop area leading to the station entrance and escalator. This station entrance will remain open during all of the construction. For added pedestrian and passenger safety, a guard rail will be installed from the front of Bus Bay #9 towards Bus Bay #10.
When: April 16, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may need to walk around the hoarding and modular fencing in order to access the existing station entrance. Signage will be placed to direct SkyTrain and bus passengers to and from the station entrance and around the construction site. Construction personnel will also be on-site to assist, manage and direct, as needed.

Royal Oak Station: Temporary Entrance Opens

What's Happening: Due to faregate construction, a temporary entrance has been opened to re-route passengers.
When: August 2 , 2011 to late May (exact date TBD)
Service Impact: Passengers can access the new temporary entrance at the back of Royal Oak Station.

Joyce-Collingwood Station: Temporary Bus Stop Change

What's Happening: To accommodate faregate construction at the southwest entrance at Joyce-Collingwood Station, the #28 Phibbs Exchange Bus will no longer stop at Bus Bay 1 and will be relocated to the re-opened Bus Bay 4.
When: April 3, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may board the #28 Phibbs Exchange at Bus Bay 4 at the north side of the station.

Columbia Station: New Development Construction

What's Happening: Northbank, a new condo and townhouse development by Ballenas Project Management, has started preconstruction at 125 Columbia Street, very close to the New Westminster Tunnel between Sapperton and Columbia Stations. Although this is not part of the OnTrack projects and there will be no impact on service, passengers and area residents may notice an increase in construction noise and activity in the area. The development is scheduled for completion in 2013.
When: April 2, 2012 until 2013
Service Impact: None, but passengers and area residents may notice an increase in construction noise and activity.

Joyce-Collingwood Station: Southwest Entrance Temporarily Closed

What's Happening: The existing southwest entrance at Joyce-Collingwood Station will temporarily close to accommodate faregate construction.
When: April 3, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may enter the station via the existing northwest or west entrances (on Vanness Avenue, elevator accessible) or the temporary east entrance located near the new Bus Bay #6 (on Joyce Street).

Patterson Station: North Entrance Temporarily Closed

What's Happening: The existing south entrance at Patterson station will temporarily close to accommodate faregate construction.
When: March 20, 2012 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may enter the station via the existing north entrance (on Central Boulevard, elevator accessible) or the temporary west ramp entrance (on Patterson Avenue). A temporary sidewalk is also in place to redirect passengers around the closed south entrance.

Scott Road Station: Temporary Elevator Closure

What's Happening: To accommodate faregate construction, the west side elevator at Scott Road Station will be out of service for up to 8 months. We regret the inconvenience, however the work is necessary to complete the construction needed to install the new faregates.
When: February 1, 2012 until approx. October 2012
Service Impact:

  • Passengers with mobility impairments arriving by bus and requiring an elevator to access the SkyTrain platform may ask an onsite SkyTrain Attendant for assistance which will usually be a taxi ride to the elevator on the station's east side.
  • Passengers with mobility impairments arriving by bus and requiring an elevator to access the SkyTrain platform may also board the C71 community shuttle. The C71 connects Scott Road, Gateway and Surrey Central stations with hourly service seven days a week and every half hour Monday to Friday during the morning and afternoon rush.
  • Passengers with mobility impairments arriving by SkyTrain and requiring an elevator to access the bus loop should use the elevator on the east side of the station and then ask an onsite SkyTrain Attendant for assistance.

Surrey Central Station: Temporary Elevator & Entrance Closure

What's Happening: In preparation for the electronic fare card and faregates, the elevator and the north entrance (including the escalator and stairs) at Surrey Central Station will be closed for approximately six months from February 1 until July 31, 2012. We regret the inconvenience, however the work is necessary to complete the construction needed to install the new faregates.
When: February 1, 2012 to July 31, 2012
Service Impact:

  • The north entrance will be closed during this period.
  • Passengers may access the station using the south entrance escalator or stairs from the bus loop island.
  • During construction, we ask passengers with mobility impairments who require the use of an elevator to use Gateway or King George as their alternate station.
  • There are four different bus routes connecting Surrey Central and Gateway stations, providing up to 20 trips per hour throughout most of the day. These routes are:
    • C71 Surrey Central Station/Scott Road Station
    • C73 Guildford/Surrey Central Station
    • 332 Guildford/Surrey Central Station
    • 335 Fleetwood/Surrey Central Station
  • People who use the elevator now will need to allow extra time for their trips.
  • Extra staff will be on hand to provide assistance.

Edmonds Station: Temporary Ramp Entrance Opens

What's Happening: The existing main entrance at Edmonds Station will be closed and a new temporary ramp entrance will open next to the main entrance.
When: December 6, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may access the new temporary ramp entrance located across from the pick-up/drop-off area.

Scott Road Station: Temporary Entrance

What's Happening: The existing entrance at the West Station House at Scott Road Station will be closed and a new temporary entrance and stairs will be open on the north side of the station house.
When: November 21, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may enter the new temporary entrance located across from the bus loop. Passengers requiring an elevator should use the entrance at the East Station House.

Scott Road Station: Temporary Relocation of HandyDART

What's Happening: Due to faregate construction, the HandyDART stop will be relocated from the south entrance of the East Station House to the north entrance of the East Station House.
When: November 8, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact:

  • Passengers may access the HandyDART at the north entrance of the East Station House.
  • A new temporary ramp has been built at this location.
  • The south entrance of the East Station House will be closed for the duration of construction.

Scott Road Station: Temporary Relocation of Impark Pay Stations

What's Happening: Due to faregate construction, the Impark Pay Stations will be temporarily relocated for the duration of construction.
When: November 8, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may access the Impark Pay Stations at the east side of the East Station House.

Millennium Line Fall Protection Installation

What's Happening: To ensure the safety of individuals working in these areas, fall protection is being installed at Millennium Line stations starting with Holdom and Production Way stations.
When: Monday October 24, 2011 until mid 2012
Service Impact: None, but passengers and people who live along the SkyTrain system may notice work being done.

Joyce-Collingwood Station: Kiss & Ride Closure

What's Happening: To accommodate faregate construction, the "Kiss & Ride" location will be closed.
When: September 16, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may no longer use this area as a drop-off/pick-up location. All parking stalls in this area will also be closed.

Patterson Station: New Temporary West Entrance

What's Happening: A new temporary ramp entrance is opening at the west entry (on Patterson Avenue) of Patterson Station. The existing west entry will be closed due to faregate construction.
When: September 9, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: Passengers may enter the west entry via the new temporary ramp entrance. Passengers requiring an elevator should use the south-east entry.

Expo Line: Fibre Optic System Upgrade

What's Happening: This project will replace obsolete fibre optic cables (used for voice, data, and radio communications) from Waterfront Station to New Westminster Station and between SkyTrain and Canada Line at Waterfront Station
When: August 2011 to January 2013
Service Impact: No direct impact to service and work should go largely unnoticed by passengers

Scott Road Station: Upgrade

What's Happening: Scott Road Station is getting a facelift. We are installing a new elevator at the west entrance, upgrading lighting, re-designing the bus loop and improving all access routes to the station including stairs, ramps, curb ramps, and parking lot access. Where possible, we'll complete this work in conjunction with the installation of fare gates so that customer impact is minimized. When: May 27, 2011 to July 2012
Service Impact: Due to the construction, a temporary station entrance will be created and parking Lot C will be closed temporarily.

What's Happening: Due to station construction, bus bays at Scott Road Station will be relocated and reorganized effective August 15, 2011.
When: August 15, 2011 until further notice
Service Impact: The temporary bus loop will be located just north of the existing exchange.

Expo Line: Power System Upgrades

What's Happening: Ten Expo Line power substations are also getting a boost - in power that is. There are 22 substations in the system (and one at SkyTrain's Operations and Maintenance Centre) which provide power to the power rail. Ten Expo Line substations are being upgraded including Main, Nanaimo, Joyce-Collingwood, Patterson, Royal Oak, 22nd Street, New Westminster, Columbia, Gateway and King George Stations.
When: The work is already underway and because it's happening within the substations, the work should go largely unnoticed by passengers.
Service Impact: No direct impact to service.

YVR Airport Station: Preliminary Faregate Construction

What's Happening: Preliminary construction has begun at YVR Airport Station in preparation for faregate equipment installation in late 2012.
When: April 16, 2012 to June 2012
Service Impact: Passengers may need to walk around the construction site to access the existing station entrance.

Templeton Station: Preliminary Faregate Construction

Patterson Station: Preliminary Faregate Construction

What's Happening: Preliminary construction has begun at Patterson Station in preparation for faregate equipment installation in late 2012.

    Sperling Station: Temporary Elevator Closures

    What Happened: Due to fall anchor installation and welding in the shaft roof, the eastbound and westbound elevators at Sperling Station will be shutdown one at a time for three hours each.
    When: May 16, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Metrotown Station: Temporary Elevator Closure

    What Happened: Due to scheduled maintenance, the elevator at Metrotown Station operating from street level to platform level will be temporarily closed for one day.
    When: May 15, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

    29th Avenue Station: Roof Installation

    What Happened: A new roof will be installed at the east entrance of 29th Avenue Station during non-revenue hours on two evenings.
    When: May 2 & May 3 during non-revenue hours.

    New Westminster Station: Bus Loop Re-opens

    What Happened: The newly reconstructed bus loop, located under a portion of the Plaza 88 development on McNeely Street, will re-open at New Westminster Station. This new bus loop will allow passengers convenient access to the SkyTrain station entrance and the retailers of Plaza 88. Coast Mountain Bus employees will be on site prior to the re-opening to inform passengers of the upcoming change.

    Patterson Station: Temporary West Entrance Closure

    What Happened: Due to a floor tile installation at Patterson Station, the west entrance will be closed for approximately one week.
    When: April 23 until Monday April 30 at 9 a.m.

    New Westminster Station: Overhead Walkway Installation

    What Happened: The Plaza 88 project will be installing a new overhead pedestrian walkway directly above the guideway at New Westminster Station. This new walkway will connect the inbound and outbound platforms, providing passengers with unobstructed access to the retailers, future movie theatres, and SkyTrain. This three-part installation will take place during the early non-revenue hours over three consecutive Sundays in April and May.
    When: April 22, April 29, & May 6, 2012 from 1:30 a.m. to start of revenue service

    Gilmore Station: Temporary Elevator

    What Happened: Due to scheduled maintenance, the eastbound elevator at Gilmore Station operating from street level to the Columbia-bound platform level will be temporarily closed for one day. Please note, the westbound elevator at Gilmore Station is currently operating from concourse level to the platform level only due to faregate construction.

    What Happened: Preliminary construction was completed at the HeliJet entrance, next to the SeaBus concourse at Waterfront Station, in preparation for faregate equipment installation in May 2012.

    What Happened: Preliminary Preliminary construction was completed at Brighouse Station in preparation for faregate equipment installation in late 2012.

    Lougheed Station: Preliminary Faregate Construction

    Automatic Train Control (ATC) Upgrades In Service

    What Happened: During two weekends in March and early April, BC Rapid Transit Company conducted tests on software upgrades to part of the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system including the System Management Centre (SMC). The upgrades will help SkyTrain Control Centre Operators, who monitor and route trains, to carry out their duties more efficiently which ultimately means even better service for passengers. After two successful testing periods, the ATC SMC upgrade will go into full revenue service.

    Plaza 88 New Westminster Station (Plaza 88): New Sidewalk Opens

    What Happened: A new sidewalk has opened at New Westminster Station connecting Carnarvon and Columbia streets at the bus loop level. The sidewalk is protected by modular fencing, closing off access to the on-going construction work in the future bus loop area. The opening of the sidewalk on January 4, 2012 was in preparation for the opening of the Shoppers Drug Mart, which opened January 5, 2012. The sidewalk now allows for complete and open access to the outbound (to VCC/Clark & King George) elevator at the street level and provides a protected route between the base of the McNeely street entrance and the parking garage.

    What Happened: The Plaza 88 project at New Westminster Station marks the first time in our region’s history that a SkyTrain station will be fully integrated into a residential/commercial development. Safeway is now open and will be followed by other tenants including Landmark Cinemas, Shoppers Drug Mart, CIBC, Wireless World Solutions (Fido), Western News, Subway, A&W, Arden Holdings, Extreme Pita, Flight Centre and Yogabody Lifestyle Shop.

Along with some general track maintenance, we're replacing old light fixtures with new and more efficient ones as well as installing new wiring. Light fixtures and wiring were replaced on the outbound (to VCC/Clark) side of the tunnel last year.

    New Westminster Station (Plaza 88): Elevator Demolition Preparation

    What Happened: In preparation for the elevator demolition scheduled to start June 6, 2011, Plaza 88 needs to cut through the wall and install an access door to the ancillary area behind (as the existing gate will be behind a construction wall once the elevator demo starts).

    New Westminster Station (Plaza 88): Concrete Pour

    What Happened: From time to time during the construction of Plaza 88, and in the future during fare gate construction at New Westminster station, there will be train service as well as station access impacts. For example, in May, a concrete pour for a new roof segment will take place above the outbound (to VCC/Clark & King George) stairway and mezzanine level at New Westminster Station which will have an impact on how passengers access the outbound platform.

    New Westminster Station (Plaza 88): TVM Removal

    What Happened: A new access door is being cut into the wall at the present location of the inbound (to Waterfront) TVM at street level. This door will provide access to the ancillary areas and washrooms, replacing the present access gate to the north of the inbound elevator that will be removed as a result of the construction.
