About the Parking Tax
The Parking Tax is a tax paid on the sale of a parking right. The Parking Tax is calculated on the purchase price of parking rights within the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) service region, including parking rights sold by hour, month, year or any other basis.
As of July 1, 2010, administration, enforcement and collection became the responsibility of TransLink as governed under the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Act, Section 169, and the Parking Rights Tax Regulation.
Prior to July 1, 2010:
- Parking Tax payable prior to July 1, 2010, collected by parking vendors (or businesses that sell parking) must be remitted to the Ministry of Finance no later than July 23, 2010, regardless of a person’s remittance frequency
- The Ministry of Finance remains responsible for audits, assessments, appeals and collections of Parking Tax payable prior to July 1, 2010
On/After July 1, 2010:
- Parking Tax payable on or after July 1, 2010, collected by parking vendors within Metro Vancouver, must be remitted to TransLink
- TransLink will be responsible for all administration of the Parking Tax including vendor registrations, audits, assessments and collections. Existing registrations under the Social Service Tax Act are valid until December 31, 2010, or the date a vendor is issued a new registration by TransLink
- TransLink will be responsible for refunds of the Parking Tax on all requests made after July 1, 2010, regardless of whether the tax was paid before, on or after July 1, 2010
