Service Optimization

The Service Optimization Initiative is a project to maximize the productivity of our major transit expansion since 2005, with a goal to improve the productivity of our bus service by 2%. It's also the start of an ongoing program that builds on TransLink's existing processes to review, monitor and make adjustments to our service.

How do we make the best use of our existing bus service?

  • Putting service where it's needed most
  • Matching service levels to demand
  • Making the best use of limited taxpayer resources
  • Making transit a more viable transportation alternative
  • Helping TransLink generate revenues to provide better service
Project Timeline
Early 2010 Develop guiding principles
Fall 2010 Receive public input
Late fall 2010 Develop an implementation plan
2011 Implement the plan
2012 and onwards Ongoing Program

Guiding Principles
Ten principles will guide decisions on how we make the best use of bus service.

Where service is underused, decisions will be made to:

  • Maintain service, to the greatest degree possible, for transit dependent customers
  • Maintain services which are strategically significant for network connectivity
  • Minimize service reductions in areas where there are no other transit alternatives
  • Minimize impacts to existing infrastructure
  • Protect growing markets, where ridership or productivity is substantially improving

Where we reinvest services and resources, decisions will be made that are expected to:

  • Generate higher ridership and/or address overcrowding
  • Generate increased revenue ridership in proportion to increased service levels
  • Maximize use of existing transit infrastructure
  • Increase revenue ridership
  • Support TransLink's long-term goals and objectives for the regional transportation system

Public Consultation Results
Public consultation on Service Optimization took place from Oct. 15 - Oct. 27, 2010 online, and at Transportation Fairs in Vancouver, Coquitlam and Surrey. Your input confirmed that the ten principles above are the right ones to guide decisions on how we make the best use of bus service.

Find out what we heard by reading the consultation summary report. The results of the consultation and the feedback you gave us have been shared with our planning team to guide the ongoing development of the Service Optimization program.
